DJI Osmo Action 4 Review: When Action Cameras Finally Get Serious

DJI entered the action camera market with something to prove, and the Osmo Action 4 at $229.00 is their strongest statement yet. The 1/1.3-inch sensor is significantly larger than what GoPro offers, capturing more light and detail in challenging conditions. Combined with 4K/120fps recording, this camera doesn't just match the competition — it leapfrogs it.

We mounted it on a mountain bike, a kayak, and a chest harness for a week of outdoor testing. The footage quality in varying light conditions consistently impressed us, and the stabilization eliminated the shaky-cam nightmare that plagues lesser action cameras.

The large sensor makes the biggest difference in low light. Where GoPro footage gets grainy and muddy at dusk, the Action 4 maintains clarity and color accuracy. D-Log M color profile gives editors flexibility in post-production without flattening the image too much for casual users who just want to upload and share.

RockStabil 3.0 is genuinely impressive — we tested it while mountain biking over rough terrain and the resulting footage looked like it was shot on a gimbal. Horizon leveling keeps the horizon flat even when the camera rotates 45 degrees, which is perfect for surfing, skiing, and other activities where the camera moves wildly.

The GoPro HERO12 Black offers similar 4K/120fps but with a smaller sensor, resulting in less impressive low-light performance. The AKASO EK7000 at $69.99 provides 4K/30fps for budget buyers. For serious content creators who demand the best image quality from an action camera, the DJI Osmo Action 4 is currently unmatched.
